An exceptional technical and conceptual player who won both Italy’s Django d’Or Award and Musica Jazz’s critics poll for Best Young Talent last year, Petrella is the most original trombonist to emerge on the international scene in recent memory. A member of Enrico Rava’s quintet, he’s heard here leading a quartet featuring British bassist Paul Rogers and Argentine saxophonist Javier Girotto, with whom he plays in another high-profile formation, France’s Orchestre national de jazz. this program of originals by these three intense instrumentalists maintains an undercurrent of harmonic and rhythmic freedom even during its more structured and melodic moments.
