ENG Jazz Special, Erling Kroner (oct/nov.2002)

What was that? Well it’s Gianluca Petrella, I almost choked on my coffee after all this pretty music. I mean this cat apparently means business! ‘Avantgardian’ music for trombone and baritone (Javier Girotto), five-string acoustic bass (Paul Rogers) and drums (Francesco Sotgiu). Reminds me in places of some of the things/ways one/we were working with when the avantgarde jazz was new and revolutionary – very good indeed! This is not your usual run-of-the-mill backwards avantgarde but an interesting amalgam of avantgardian and other musical elements, all there for the sake of expression, it feels like. Nice, original music, very interesting getting to know him, check it out! And by the way ALL FOUR of them are just great! Apart from names and titles there are no further information, always very frustrating when one stumbles across some hitherto unknown musicians and want to learn more about them, their background and the who’s and why’s.
