For UK listeners at least, the most familiar name on this disc is likely to be that of bass player Paul Rogers, and his presence should tip any prospective buyer to the fact that this Italian outfit is not a straight-ahead jazz band. Trombonist Gianluca Petrella and his quartet, featuring Javier Girotto on baritone saxophone, Rogers on his five-string acoustic bass, and drummer Francesco Sotgiu, work in a more flexible musical territory, moving in unrestrained fashion between structure and freedom, and between time and no time. They do it with great skill and invention, and the music – all written (or improvised) by the band – is very appealing. The unusual combination of horns gives the ensemble a distinctive sound, and Girotto’s switch to quena and soprano saxophone on the final track provides a nice variation on it.
